The BreathtakerI just got done reading one of the scariest books I've ever read. Now, I don't generally read scary novels - Dean Koontz - yuk. Stephen King - mostly yuk. RL Stine - uber-yuk.
I read "Silence of the Lambs" before I ever saw the movie and it scared me so much, I was sure Jamie Lumb was going to come in through the window. I was living on the ground floor of my dorm at the time. During the summer. There were 5 people in the very large dorm. I was the only one on my floor. I haven't read any more of Thomas Harris's books.
I can still tell you in detail the very first truly scary book I read. I can't remember the name, but I remember the whole story....
Anyway, so I make it a point to not read scary novels. I don't enjoy them because my brain usually runs away with me and I have a hard time sleeping. (I don't watch scary movies, either.)
I didn't think that this book would be scary. It was a mystery. But it threw in a twist: tornados. I am both entranced and scared of tornados, thunderstorms, violent weather of any kind. I love the movie "Twister." The movie "The Day After Tomorrow" was right up my alley. Tornados are what drew me to the book.
I didn't think anything would be too bad in this book... it was a mystery, after all. However, I forgot about my imagination and the power of a good story to lure you in beyond what is good for you.
I went upstairs with the lights on. Jumped when I heard a rumble of a truck going by - thought for sure it was thunder or a funnel cloud heading my way. Waited for the door to open with "The Tornado Killer" standing there... yeah. Creepy.
So give "The Breathtaker" by Alice Blanchard a read...
